In Kyoto, I’m staying in a Machiya, or Japanese traditional wooden townhouse. It has two storeys and features timber and rice paper screens, tatami mats, vintage furniture, wooden floors and a little Japanese courtyard garden.
It is a unique experience – sleeping on a futon, bathing in a soak tub, crossing my legs or kneeling at a table… Living as close as possible to the ground, it seems.
Also, the house is old and built in small proportions, so my family feels gigantic in it! We are constantly having to bend to go through doorways or avoid hitting out heads on overhead shelves.
